USI breaks streak with 1-0 victory

Vellky's second half goal provides the winning margin

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team broke a three-game losing streak with a 1-0 victory over the University of Indianapolis Friday evening at Strassweg Field. USI saw its record jump to 4-4-1 and 3-4-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while UIndy falls to 1-6-2, 0-5-2 GLVC.

After a scoreless first half that was dominated by the Greyhounds outshooting the Screaming Eagles, 8-1, USI senior forward Madi Vellky (Dublin, Ohio) scored the game-winning goal at 56:08 on the Eagles' second shot of the night. Vellky was assisted on her third goal of the season by sophomore forward Haley Rheinlander (Evansville, Indiana) and freshman forward Ryley Hancock (Evansville, Indiana).

Rheinlander started the game-winning play by crossing the ball into the box where Hancock redirected the ball to Vellky for the score.

Vellky's third tally of the season ties her for the team-high in goals with junior defender Kelsey Smith (Evansville, Indiana) and gives her eight points on the season, tying her with Hancock for team lead. Hancock, who picked up her eighth point of the season with the assist, has a team-high four assists in 2015.

Between the posts, freshman goalkeeper Emily Hopkins (Greenfield, Indiana) posted her fourth win and third shutout of the year. Hopkins preserved the Eagles' shutout victory by making a season-high 10 saves.

The Eagles conclude its short two-game homestand Sunday when they host Saint Joseph's College for a noon kick-off. The USI-Saint Joseph's match is the Eagles' "Kick for the Cure" Day.

Saint Joseph's saw its record go to 1-8-1, 1-6-0 GLVC, after losing at 18th-ranked Bellarmine University, 3-0, in Louisville, Kentucky. USI holds an 11-9-2 all-time series lead over Saint Joseph's after posting a 1-0 win last year in Rensselaer, Indiana. The Eagles have won the last six meetings with the Pumas since 2009.
