USI volleyball wraps up Crossover with sweep of Lakers

AURORA, Ill.—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team cruised to a 25-20, 25-14, 25-16 victory over Lake Superior State University in its final match of the Mizuno/Midwest Region Crossover Saturday afternoon.

Senior right side hitter Erica Oberbroeckling (Westfield, Indiana) had eight kills, a .471 attacking percentage, and 10 digs to lead the Screaming Eagles.

USI (14-7) jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the opening set before settling on the five-point win. The Eagles rallied from a 6-1 deficit in the second frame; then used a blistering .810 side-out percentage to cruise to a nine-point win in the final stanza.

Senior middle blocker Abbey Winter (Germantown, Illinois) had eight kills and 10 blocks to aid the Eagles' efforts.

The Eagles held the Lakers (0-16) to a .074 attacking percentage.

Sophomore outside hitter Shelbi Morris (Brazil, Indiana) and sophomore libero Shannon Farrell (Munster, Indiana) had 12 digs and 10 digs, respectively, to lead USI's back row. Freshman setter Erika Peoples (Bloomington, Indiana) had 24 assists.

Earlier in the day, the Eagles defeated Wayne State University in four sets. USI rallied back from large deficits in the first and second sets to earn two-point wins; then overcame a late Wayne State surge to claim a two-point win in the fourth frame.

After nearly a month on the road, the Eagles return to the Physical Activities Center Friday at 7 p.m. to host the University of Indianapolis in their "Dig for the Cure" match.

Note: With a 28-20 record, the Great Lakes Valley Conference captured its second straight win in the Crossover. The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference finished with a 24-24 mark, while the Great Midwest Athletic Conference was 2-10.
