Owensboro, Ky. – The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team opened the 2014 campaign with a 1-0 shutout of Kentucky Wesleyan College Thursday evening in Owensboro, Kentucky. The Screaming Eagles (1-0-0) begin the season with a victory for the first time since 2010.
USI senior midfielder
Carlos Mayser (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) provided the margin of victory in the second half with the Eagles' first goal of the season. Mayser scored his fifth career goal as an Eagle at 70:19.
On the defensive side of the field, junior goalkeeper
Auston Bruder (Evansville, Indiana) made his USI debut a memorable one by recording a shutout. Bruder faced eight shots and made four saves in the win.
As a team, the Eagles outshot the Panthers overall, 14-8, and on-goal, 7-4.
USI continues the season-opening, four-game road swing Saturday when it travels to Nashville, Tennessee, to play Trevecca University. Match time is 5 p.m.
The Eagles complete the road swing next weekend when they start the Great Lakes Valley Conference scheduled by traveling to Quincy University (September 12) and Truman State University (September 14).
