Fawn Ryan (Batesville, Indiana) tallied a match-high 13 kills in USI's three-set sweep of Great Lakes Valley East Division foe Bellarmine University Tuesday evening at the Physical Activities Center.
The Screaming Eagles improved to 4-3 in conference play, 8-4 overall, while the Knights head back to Louisville, Kentucky with a 2-5 GLVC record.
Assisting Ryan in the Eagles' attack was senior outside hitter
Lauren DeShaney (Appleton, Wisconsin) who came up with eight digs and two blocks, while junior middle blocker
Abbey Winter (Germantown, Illinois) led at the net with a match-high five blocks.
Sophomore setter
Quin Shoultz (Columbus, Indiana) kept the pace on the court tallying a match-high 32 assists, while also contributing 10 digs, three kills, one ace, and three blocks.
Freshman libero
Jessica Lee (Mackinaw, Illinois) came up with a match-high 19 digs, while fellow classmate
Shelbi Morris (Brazil, Indiana), who registered her first collegiate match start, added eight digs and five kills.
Bellarmine opened the first frame with an 8-4 lead, but USI soon closed the gap off back-to-back kills by Ryan and Morris. The Eagles battled to stay in the front position, holding a three-point lead for much of the remainder, before taking the frame 25-21.
Set two was as close as it could get, as both teams fought for a lead and eventually tied it up at 24-24. A kill by sophomore middle blocker
Amy Zwissler (Bloomington, Indiana), followed by an error by BU, solidified USI's 2-0 lead and 26-24 second frame win.
The Knights came out swinging after the break, leading for much of the third set. USI, down 17-13, took control of the frame with a 8-0 run that aided in its 25-21 set three win.
USI returns to action Friday at 7 p.m. when it hosts GLVC East Division opponent University of Wisconsin-Parkside in its annual Dig For the Cure Match at the PAC.
