Auston Bruder (Evansville, Indiana) posted a shutout in leading the Screaming Eagles to a 1-0 victory over Lewis University Sunday afternoon at Strassweg Field. The Eagles rise to 3-4-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the GLVC, while the Flyers drop to 5-2-1, 4-1-1 GLVC.
After USI and Lewis battled for 84 scoreless minutes, Weinzapfel broke through the center of the Flyer's defense and scored the game-winning goal off a pass from senior forward
Caleb Mathers (Clarkston, Michigan). The goal was Weinzapfel's second of the season, while the assist was Mathers' second of the fall.
On USI's defensive side of the field, Bruder stared down nine Lewis shots and made two saves to earn his third shutout of the season. The Flyers had entered Sunday's match averaging nearly two goals per outing before being shut down by Bruder and the Eagle defense.
Overall, the Flyers had the lead in shots, 9-7, and in corner kicks, 6-4.
The Eagles hit the road next week when they travel to Saint Joseph's College Friday and the University of Indianapolis Sunday. Kick-off for Friday's match in Rensselaer, Indiana, is 5 p.m., while Sunday's start time in Indianapolis, Indiana, is 1:30 p.m. (CDT).
USI returns to the friendly surroundings of Strassweg Field October 10 when the Eagles host William Jewell College for a 7:30 p.m. match.
