ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team battled back from a 2-0 deficit to earn a 2-2 tie versus Maryville University Sunday afternoon at Strassweg Field. USI goes to 1-4-1 overall and 0-3-1 GLVC, while Maryville watches its records go to 3-1-2, 2-1-0 GLVC.
The Screaming Eagles found themselves down 2-0 early in the match after the Saints converted on a penalty kick at 5:28 and a tally at 23:17. USI would cut the 2-0 deficit in half at 33:15 when junior forward
Madi Vellky (Dublin, Ohio) scored an unassisted goal, beating a pair of defenders and the Saints' goalkeeper. The score would remain, 2-1, through the intermission.
In the second half, the Eagles continued to push forward and converted with 1:11 left when senior defender
Katelan Carneal (Evansville, Indiana) scored the equalizer on a restart. Carneal got the chance to force overtime after the Saints committed a foul at the edge of the box.
In the first overtime period, USI and Maryville drove the ball up and down the field with Maryville posting the only shot. The final 10 minute overtime period was much like the first only with Maryville leading in shots, 4-1.
Through the 110 minutes of the double-overtime match, Maryville had a 17-13 advantage in shots and a 9-4 margin in corner kicks.
Between the posts for USI, sophomore goalkeeper
Courtney Lofland (Indianapolis, Indiana) was credited with a tie in her first start as an Eagle. Lofland allowed two goals and made three saves in her 110 minutes of action.
USI starts the second half of the four-game homestand Friday when it hosts the University of Wisconsin-Parkside for a 5 p.m. match. The season's first homestand comes to an end September 28 when the Eagles welcome Lewis University to Strassweg Field for a noon match-up.
