USI opens 2014 across the river at KWC


 
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team kicks off the 2014 season with a four-match road swing, beginning at Kentucky Wesleyan College. Match time in Owensboro, Kentucky, is 7 p.m.
 
Following the season-opening match at KWC, the Screaming Eagles conclude the first half of the road trip when they travel further south Saturday to visit Trevecca University in Nashville, Tennessee. The Saturday kick-off is slated for 5 p.m.

Week 1 Eagle Notes:
 
Building on the end of 2013: The Eagles hope to build on the success they saw at the end of last fall. USI was 5-1-2 in the final eight games of 2013, compared to 2-5-1 in the first half of last year.
 
On the road in 2013: USI had a better record on the road last fall, going 4-2-3 away from Strassweg Field in 2013. The Eagles were 3-5-0 at home last year.
 
Leading scorer returns for senior season. Senior forward Caleb Mathers returns for his final season after leading the Eagles in scoring with 14 points on five goals and a team-high four assists in 2013.
 
New defenders of the goal. The Eagles will have new faces between the posts with three new goalkeepers this fall. USI is replacing Jeffrey Neidlinger who started all 17 games last fall and posted a 1.19 goals against average.
 
Santoro begins his sixth year. USI Head Coach Mat Santoro has a 38-43-6 overall record at USI, but is 18-14-3 in the last two seasons.
 
USI leads all-time record with KWC. The Eagles have a dominating 26-6-2 all-time series record with the Panthers of KWC. USI also has won the last 12 meetings with KWC, including last fall when the Eagles defeated the Panthers, 6-0, at Strassweg Field.
 
USI vs. Travecca. USI and Trevecca will be meeting in men's soccer for the first time on Saturday.
 
Eagles vs. the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. KWC and Trevecca are members of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. USI has a 28-10-3 all-time record against members of the G-MAC.
