Lauren DeShaney (Appleton, Wisconsin) downed 16 kills and became the 12
th player in USI volleyball history to eclipse the 1,000-career kill mark as the Screaming Eagles defeated William Jewell College, 3-1, Saturday evening at the Physical Activities Center.
USI, who opened up its regular-season Great Lakes Valley Conference slate against the Cardinals, improve to 5-1 overall. William Jewell falls to 1-6 overall, 0-1 in the GLVC, traveling to Louisville, Kentucky, for a match against Bellarmine University Sunday afternoon.
Senior outside hitter
Fawn Ryan (Batesville, Indiana) led USI's attack with a match-high 18 kills, while sophomore setter
Quin Shoultz (Columbus, Indiana) lead with a match-high and season-high 42 assists. Three Eagles, junior
Erica Oberbroeckling (Westfield, Indiana), along with freshmen
Shannon Farrell (Munster, Indiana) and
Jessica Lee (Mackinaw, Illinois), tallied double-digit digs with 10, 10 and 14, respectively. Junior middle blocker
Abbey Winter (Germantown, Illinois) had an outstanding performance at the net totaling nine blocks, one of which was a solo.
William Jewell built a 10-4 lead in the first set, forcing USI to take a timeout. Back on the court however, the Cardinals were able to keep their lead throughout the set, leaving the home team to play catch-up. WJC also maintained a presence at the net, totaling seven team blocks, taking a 1-0 lead as the Eagles dropped the opening frame, 25-21.
USI answered back in set two, holding the Cardinals to a -.024 attacking percentage. The Eagles totaled 14 kills, lead by Ryan with five, three team blocks, and one ace, taking the set, 25-18, forcing a fourth frame.
Both teams battled for the lead after intermission with USI prevailing at 20-15. Ryan put down four kills, Oberbroeckling finished it off with a kill of her own, as the Eagles grabbed a 2-1 lead after taking the third set, 25-18.
The fourth and final frame was all Southern Indiana, as the Eagles outhit William Jewell .357 to -.114. USI went on two, five-plus, scoring runs to end the set in its favor, 25-9.
The Eagles complete their homestand Sunday with a 1 p.m. match against West Division leader Rockhurst University. Rokhurst, the only team in the GLVC with an undefeated overall record, improved to 6-0 on the season after taking Bellarmine in straight-sets.
