QUINCY, Ill. – The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team withstood an offensive barrage by #22 Quincy University for 85 minutes before falling 3-0 Friday evening in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener at Quincy, Illinois. The Screaming Eagles see their record fall to 1-2-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the GLVC, while Quincy goes to 3-0-0, 1-0-0 GLVC.
The Eagles and the Hawks battled to a scoreless tie through the first 45 minutes. Quincy had the advantage on the offensive end, leading 11-3 in shots, but USI and junior goalkeeper
Auston Bruder (Evansville, Indiana) stood tall with six saves to keep the Hawks off the scoreboard.
In the second half, the USI defense continued to hold until the final five minutes when Quincy broke through and scored three goals. Bruder was tough in goal, despite allowing the three goals, and made a season-high eight saves in the match while facing 30 total shots.
Overall, Quincy held a significant advantage in shots, 30-3, and in corner kicks, 8-3.
The Eagles complete the season-opening road swing Sunday when they travel to Truman State University for a 2:30 p.m. kick-off. USI plays its first regular season game at Strassweg Field September 19 when its hosts the University of Missouri-St. Louis for a GLVC contest.
