INDIANAPOLIS---The University of Southern Indiana softball team could not hold on to a 3-2 lead in game one against 17th ranked University of Indianapolis Sunday afternoon, falling 4-3 after the Greyhounds registered a two-run homer in the final half inning. USI prevented a shutout by UIndy, scoring a run late in the seventh inning of game two, but could not register enough runs, ending the season with a 7-1 loss.

The Screaming Eagles end the 2014 campaign at 22-23 overall, 12-22 in Great Lakes Valley Conference action, while the Greyhounds, 39-9 overall, 28-4 GLVC, will continue on to the conference tournament next week in Peoria, Illinois.

UIndy pounded out a single-run homer to left field to take an early 1-0 lead in its portion of the second inning. However, the Eagles would rally back in the next half inning, scoring three runs for the front position.

Senior Alison Nord (Gentryville, Indiana) had a leadoff single to centerfield and soon advanced to second off fellow classmate, Teri Newmaster's (Elberfeld, Indiana), single to the same spot.

With two outs and two on, freshman Grace Clark (Indianapolis, Indiana) was walked to load the bases up. Haley Hodges (Portage, Indiana) answered the scoring call with a single up the middle that was good enough to send both Nord and Newmaster across home plate.

Sophomore Janna Green (Glenwood, Indiana) followed with an RBI-single to push the Eagles' lead to 3-1.

Indianapolis scored another run in the bottom of the fourth to cut USI's lead to 3-2.

The Eagles had an opportunity to extend its lead as their five, six and seven-hole hitters (Hodges, Green, Kelsey Jankowski (Cedar Lake, Indiana)) all recorded single hits to load the bases.  USI could not execute any RBIs as it registered two-straight strikeouts and a grounder to the shortstop, stranding all three runners on base.

With one on and two outs in the final inning, the Greyhounds sent one over the left field fence to take game one, 4-3.

Junior Brooke Harmening (Whiteland, Indiana) was tabbed with the game one loss, ending the season at 14-10, after throwing five strikeouts and two walks.

Both teams remained scoreless through the first two innings of game two.

Indianapolis worked the bases well in its portion of the third, tallying the first run of the game for a 1-0 lead.  The Greyhounds then homered in the fourth and registered two RBI-singles, building a 4-0 advantage by the end of the inning.  They scored three more runs in the fifth and sixth for a 7-0 lead.

Clark prevented a shutout by UIndy with an RBI-single late in the seventh inning that scored Newmaster from second. The Eagles could not build off the one run, falling 7-1.

Harmening came in to relieve starting pitcher Sarah Owens (Indianapolis, Indiana) with two outs on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Owens took the loss, however, closing out the season with a 7-13 record. In her 3.2 innings of work, she tallied two strikeouts and walked five batters.

As a team, the Eagles ended the season hitting .283, with junior MacKenzi Dorsam (Dubois, Indiana), leading the pack with a .388 batting average.
