RENNSELAER, Ind.---The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team completed its regular-season Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule Saturday afternoon, while also earning a ticket to the 2014 GLVC Championship Tournament, following a 3-0 (25-9, 25-0, 25-0) win over host Saint Joseph's College.
The Screaming Eagles powered through the first set, establishing a 16-5 lead before eventually taking it all, 25-9.
In the following frame, USI kept the momentum going, building a 9-1 lead and forcing the Pumas to take an early timeout. Back on the court the Eagles ran away with a 25-8 win, to lead Saint Joseph's College 2-0.
USI raced out to a 16-9 lead in the third set, but the Pumas battled to come within two points of the Eagles, forcing a timeout with a 20-18 score. Following a tied score of 21-21, the Eagles used a 2-1 run to get to match point, but were halted by a timeout from the host team. Once back on the court, USI sealed the sweep with a 25-22 win.
Sophomore setter
Quin Shoultz (Columbus, Indiana) racked up 22 assists to help pace USI's attacking game.
Leading the Eagles' attack was senior outside hitter
Lauren DeShaney (Appleton, Wisconsin) who tallied 10 kills, while defensively, junior right side hitter
Erica Oberbroeckling (Westfield, Indiana) led USI with 14 digs.
The Eagles were a force at the net, tallying 11 total team blocks, with sophomore middle blocker
Amy Zwissler (Bloomington, Indiana) paving the way with five.
The 2014 GLVC Championship Tournament will be held Thursday, November 13 thru Saturday, November 15 at the Eastside Centre in Peoria, Illinois.
USI will face West Division leader Truman State University in the opening round of the tournament. More information regarding tournament seeding will be released later Saturday evening following the conclusion of all conference matches.
