Eagles drop exhibition opener to Indiana State

TERRE HAUTE, Ind.— Cold-shooting and turnovers doomed the University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team in a 72-39 loss to Indiana State University in an exhibition contest at the Hulman Center in Terre Haute, Indiana.

The Screaming Eagles shot just 12-of-47 from the field and turned the ball over 28 times against the Sycamores. USI kept pace with Indiana State in the first half, trailing just 23-15 at the break. In the second half, ISU used a 12-1 run beginning at the 15:11 mark to increase their lead to 42-22.

The Eagles recorded just three points in a nearly seven minute stretch from 15:34 to 8:14 in the second half, while Indiana State caught fire for 21 points. USI struggled to find its rhythm, as the Eagles shot just 1-of-14 from beyond the arc and converted on just 14-of-30 opportunities at the free throw line.

Senior Anna Hackert (Evansville, Indiana) led the Eagles with nine points to go along with six rebounds in the loss. Hackert registered eight points and six rebounds in the first half, but struggled to contribute in the second stanza due to increased Sycamore pressure before fouling out with 8:39 left to play.

Following Hackert was senior Mary O'Keefe (Edwardsville, Illinois) and freshman Kaydie Grooms (Marshall, Illinois) who each tallied seven points in the game. Grooms, appearing in her first action as an Eagle, finished the night three-of-five from the field in just 12 minutes of play. In all, nine Eagles scored in the exhibition and eleven saw playing time.

The Sycamores were led by senior Jasmine Grier, who ignited for 15 second half points amidst Indiana State's 12-1 run, and finished with 22 points on 7-of-13 shooting.  ISU shot a scorching 65% (13-20) in the second half, while converting 13-of-16 shots at the charity stripe.

USI returns to the court quickly with an exhibition against the University of Evansville on Saturday at the Ford Center. Tip-off for the Eagles' final exhibition is noon. Tickets are available online or in person at the Ford Center box office.
