Eagles conclude regular-season home slate with Hawks, Bulldogs



EVANSVILLE, Ind.
--- The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team concludes its 2014 home slate this weekend at the Physical Activities Center, beginning Saturday at 5 p.m., as it takes on Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division opponent Quincy University (7-15, 2-9 GLVC), followed by a 1 p.m. bout Sunday against West Division leader 23rd-ranked Truman State University (19-2, 11-0 GLVC).
 
Prior to the start of Saturday's match, the Screaming Eagles will honor its two seniors, outside hitters Lauren DeShaney (Appleton, Wisconsin) and Fawn Ryan (Batesville, Indiana).
 
A week of regional action: USI enters this weekend coming off a 5-0 week against Midwest Region opponents from the Great Midwest Athletic Conference along with the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Eagles tallied a four-set win over G-MAC leader Cedarville University last week Tuesday, before going undefeated at the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover tournament with wins against Ashland University, Northwood University, and Walsh University. USI concluded with a sweep over Trevecca Nazarene Tuesday in Nashville, Tennessee.  
 
Current GLVC East Division standings: USI (16-6, 6-5 GLVC) is currently tied for fourth with University of Wisconsin-Parkside, in the GLVC East Division volleyball standings, trailing McKendree University who posts a 7-4 conference mark.
 
USI leaders: Leading USI's attack are Ryan and DeShaney, who average 3.33 kills/set and 2.79 kills/set, respectively. Both have eclipsed the 1,000-career kill mark this season. Defensively, freshman libero Jessica Lee (Mackinaw, Illinois) enters the weekend averaging 3.90 digs/set, while junior middle blocker Abbey Winter (Germantown, Illinois) leads at the net with 100 total blocks, averaging 1.32/set. Sophomore setter Quin Shoultz (Columbus, Indiana) leads in assists averaging 9.84/set.

Quincy University notes: The Hawks are also coming off a 3-0 showing at the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Tournament, posting wins against Walsh University, Lake Erie College, and Ashland University. Quincy is led by senior outside hitter Samantha Haegele who has tallied 171 kills, thus far, and averages 2.19 kill/set. Defensively, senior defensive specialist Summer Holder leads with 264 digs (4.80/set), while at the net freshman middle blocker Jessica Licurgo averages 1.01 blocks per set.
 
Eagles vs. Hawks: USI leads the all-time series with Quincy, 24-12. Last year, the Eagles swept the Hawks, 3-0, on the road at Pepsi Arena in Quincy, Illinois.
 
Truman State notes: The 23rd-ranked Bulldogs are the only team in the GLVC to remain undefeated in conference play and currently holds a 17-game winning streak. Truman visits Bellarmine University, Saturday, before making its way over to Evansville for Sunday's match against the Screaming Eagles.
 
Eagles vs. Bulldogs: This is the second regular-season conference matchup between Truman and the Eagles, and the sixth overall. The Bulldogs lead the all-time series, 4-1, after falling in four sets during the 2013 regular-season, before defeating USI, 3-1, in the opening round of the GLVC Tournament.
