Eagles lose battle with Miners, 1-0

ROLLA, Mo. – The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team lost a hard fought battle with Missouri University Science & Technology, 1-0, Sunday afternoon in Rolla, Missouri. The Screaming Eagles fall to 5-7-2 overall and 4-6-2 in the GLVC, while the Miners pull a game ahead of USI in the GLVC standings at 6-6-2, 5-5-2 GLVC.

The loss drops USI into a tie with the University of Wisconsin-Parkside for eighth in the conference, but the Rangers have the tiebreaker with the Eagles with a victory at Strassweg Field, 1-0, earlier this fall. The top eight teams in the GLVC, as decided by winning percentage, advance to the conference's post-season tournament.

The Eagles and the Miners raced back and forth across the field during the opening half with neither team getting the upper hand. USI had a slight advantage in shots, 8-3, but could not gain the momentum necessary to score.

In the second half, Missouri S&T's offense gained the initiative three minutes after the intermission and scored on its first shot after halftime. The Miners posted its game-winning tally at 48:37.

The teams would resume their battle up and down the field for the final 42 minutes, but USI could not find the equalizing goal. Missouri S&T had a slight lead in shots, 15-13, in the match, while each team had a pair of corner kicks.

USI has three matches remaining in the 2014 regular season schedule, two of which will be at home. The Eagles start the home stretch of the campaign Friday at 7:30 p.m. when they host McKendree University at Strassweg Field before traveling to the University of Illinois Springfield October 26. The final USI home of 2014 is October 29 at 7:30 p.m. when the Eagles host Bellarmine University at Strassweg Field.
