Ryan reaches 1,000 as Eagles take Yellow Jackets in four

EVANSVILLE, Ind.--- University of Southern Indiana senior outside hitter Fawn Ryan (Batesville, Indiana) put down her 1,000th career-kill in the opening frame of USI's four-set win over Midwest Region opponent Cedarville University Tuesday evening at the Physical Activities Center.

Ryan, who also led the match with 19 kills, is the 13th person in Screaming Eagle volleyball history to reach such milestone. She joins fellow classmate, outside hitter Lauren DeShaney (Appleton, Wisconsin), who reached the mark earlier this season.

The Eagles dominated the first set, 25-17, before going head-to-head with the Yellow Jackets in the following frame, eventually falling, after a long battle for set point, 30-28.

Following the break, USI returned to its dominating ways with a 25-15 and 25-17 win in the final two frames.

DeShaney along with junior middle blocker Abbey Winter (Germantown, Illinois) combined for 20 kills, while sophomore setter Quin Shoultz (Columbus, Indiana) added nine, while also ending the game with a match-high 41 assists.

Defensively, junior right side hitter Erica Oberbroeckling (Westfield, Indiana) led with 17 digs and six kills, while junior defensive specialist Erin Goldschmidt (Smithton, Illinois), who made the switch to libero mid match, added 16 digs.

The Eagles head north Friday and Saturday, taking on three Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference teams in the Great Lakes Valley Conference/GLIAC Crossover Tournament in Aurora, Illinois.

USI opens the tournament Friday with Ashland University at 11:30 a.m., before taking on Northwood University at 5:30 p.m. The Eagles close the tournament with a 1 p.m. match against Walsh University.
