Eagles want strong finish to homestand

USI welcomes back '93-94 team Saturday

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The 10th-ranked University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team looks to finish strong in its four-game homestand when it hosts Saint Joseph's College (4-10, 1-3 GLVC) Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and 14th-ranked University of Indianapolis (11-1, 3-1 GLVC) Saturday at 3:15 p.m. USI will recognize members of the 1993-94 Screaming Eagles prior to Saturday's game to honor the 20th-anniversary of team's run the NCAA Division II Tournament finals.

The Eagles (11-1, 3-1 GLVC) were 1-1 in the first half of the homestand last week, defeating Missouri University of Science & Technology, 81-69, and falling to 3rd-ranked Drury University, 64-56. Senior forward Aaron Nelson (Chicago Heights, Illinois) led the way for the Eagles with 26.5 points and 18.0 rebounds per contest. He had a team-best 29 points against Drury and 23 rebounds in the win over Missouri S&T.
 
Despite the 1-1 week, the Eagles only fell two spots to 10th in the NABC/Division II Top 25 poll. USI has been in the top-10 nationally for the last three weeks. Bellarmine University and Drury joined USI in the top 10, ranking second and seventh, respectively.
 
The GLVC also was represented by UIndy (14th) and Lewis University (23rd).
 
USI Men's Basketball notes versus Saint Joseph's and #14 UIndy:

Eagles and Nelson leading the nation in rebounding. The Screaming Eagles lead the nation in rebound margin with a 46.2-28.0 advantage over its opponents. Senior forward Aaron Nelson ranks first in the NCAA Division II and leads the GLVC with 14.3 rebounds per contest.

Eagles ranked nationally in shooting. USI is ranked sixth nationally in field goal percentage, 53.6 percent (334-623).

USI leaders last week. Senior forward Aaron Nelson led the Eagles at the PAC to start the homestand with 26.5 points and 18.0 rebounds per contest. Nelson was the only Eagle to average in double-figures last week.

Eagles reached 11-0. USI reached the 11-0 mark for the second time in the last five years and the fifth time in the history of the program. The best start for the Eagles was in 2009-10 when they won 23 in a row in the first season under Head Coach Rodney Watson.

USI loses to first ranked team of 2013-14. The Eagles lost to their first ranked opponent of 2013-14, falling to third-ranked Drury University, 64-56. USI is 57-47 (.548) since 1992-93.

Nelson has opponents seeing double. Senior forward Aaron Nelson has a GLVC-best and USI-record setting 12-straight double-doubles this season. The 12 double-doubles also is second in the NCAA Division II. Chris Bowles posted a USI-record 18 double-doubles in 1991-92.

On pace to destroy a record. Senior forward Aaron Nelson is on pace to destroy the USI single-season record for rebounds. At his current pace, Nelson could finish the year with 371 rebounds, nearly 39 better than the record of 332 set by former All-American Chris Thompson in 2005-06.

Saint Joseph's in 2013-14. The Pumas of Saint Joseph's College come to the PAC with a 4-10 overall record and a 1-3 start to the GLVC. Saint Joseph's has lost it last two games and five of its last six games.

Last year USI versus Saint Joseph's. In 2012-13, the Eagles swept the Pumas for the fourth straight year. USI defeated Saint Joseph's at the PAC, 90-81, and in Rensselaer, Indiana, 73-58.

UIndy in 2013-14. The Greyhounds of the University of Indianapolis have matched USI with an 11-1 overall record and 3-1 mark in the GLVC. UIndy, who visits Bellarmine University before coming to the PAC, swept last week's games at home with wins over Rockhurst University, 85-69, and William Jewell College, 84-82.

Last year USI versus UIndy. USI swept the season series from UIndy last season, winning at home, 69-55, and in Indianapolis, 87-62. The Eagles have won three-straight from the Greyhounds since losing both regular season games in 2011-12.
