EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team opened the 2013 season with a dominating 2-0 shutout of Ohio Dominican University Saturday afternoon at Strassweg Field. USI starts the year 1-0-0 for the first time since 2010 and just the second time since 2005.
After a slow start, the Screaming Eagles got the eventual game winning goal at 27:17 off the foot of sophomore forward
Madi Vellky (Dublin, Ohio). Vellky, who has seven career goals, five of which are game-winners, found the back of the goal after receiving a cross from freshman defender
Gabriella Korte (St. Louis, Missouri). The assist was Korte's first collegiate point.
USI sealed the victory six minutes later when freshman forward
Natalie Geiger (Norwood, Ohio) recorded her first collegiate goal on a breakaway at 33:10. Sophomore midfielder
Leslie Schapker (Newburgh, Indiana) started the breakaway by feeding the ball down the right-hand side of the field to Geiger, who beat a defender and goalkeeper for the tally.
The Eagles' defense also made a huge contribution to the win by limiting the Panthers to five total shots and only three shots on-goal. USI sophomore goalkeeper
Jackie Lohmann (Owensboro, Kentucky) earned her seventh career shutout by making three saves.
USI continues the season-opening three-game homestand at 4 p.m. Monday when it hosts Urbana University. The Blue Knights opens the 2013 campaign tonight when they play at Cedarville University.
The three-game homestand concludes September 13 when the Eagles host the University of Illinois Springfield to open the 2013 GLVC schedule.
