CEDARVILLE, Ohio– The University of Southern of Southern Indiana men's soccer team opened the 2013 campaign by battling Cedarville University to a scoreless, double-overtime tie Thursday evening in Cedarville, Ohio. USI and Cedarville both start the season 0-0-1.
The Screaming Eagles and the Yellow Jackets battled back-and-forth across the field for 110 minutes with both failing to gain the upper hand in the attacking zone. Cedarville outshot USI, 18-5 overall and 8-2 shots on-goal, while posting an 11-5 advantage in corner kicks. The Eagles were the only team to record shots in the overtime sessions, two in the first extra period.
USI was led in the tie by its defense and the play of senior goalkeeper
Jeffrey Neidlinger (Carmel, Indiana). Neidlinger recorded seven saves in the match, three in the opening 45 minutes and four in the second half.
The Eagles kick off the 2013 home schedule with the second annual "Gold Game" Sunday at 1:30 p.m. when they host Kentucky Wesleyan College. USI's players will be wearing gold jerseys in the home opener to promote awareness of pediatric cancer.
