Eagles begin with three-game homestand
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team kicks off the 2013 season at noon September 7 when the Screaming Eagles host Ohio Dominican University at Strassweg Field. USI hits the midway point of the three-game homestand September 9 when Urbana University visits Strassweg Field for a 4 p.m. match.
The Eagles complete three game homestand September 13 when they open Great Lakes Valley Conference action against the University of Illinois Springfield. Start time is 5 p.m.
WEEK 1 EAGLE NOTES:
USI hopes to pay back Ohio Dominican. The Eagles hope the friendly surroundings of Strassweg Field can reverse their fortunes against the Panthers of Ohio Dominican. The Panthers took the only meeting between the two programs, 3-0, last fall in Columbus, Ohio.
USI vs. the GLIAC. Ohio Dominican is a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. USI is 9-12-2 against the 15-team GLIAC.
Eagles hosting Urbana in second game of homestand. The second game of the homestand will feature USI against Urbana University. The Eagles hold a 3-0-0 all-time margin against the Blue Knights, including a 3-1 victory last fall.
Urbana represents new conference. Urbana represents the Mountain East Conference, a new NCAA Division II league in Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia. The new conference includes Concord University, Fairmont State University, Glenville State University, Shepherd University, the University of Charleston, West Liberty University, West Virginia State University, Wheeling Jesuit University, West Virginia Wesleyan University, Notre Dame College, and University of Virginia at Wise.
USI in the GLVC. USI was picked to place ninth in the upcoming GLVC season. The Eagles are coming off a sixth-place showing in the GLVC's 2012 regular season and a fourth-straight appearance in the conference tournament.
Engelbrecht in the lead. Head Coach Krissy Engelbrecht is in her 10th season at the helm. Engelbrecht, who has a 77-92-12 overall record during her tenure with the Eagles, led USI to a 10-7-1 overall record in 2012 and to three-straight winning seasons.
Top returning scorer. Sophomore forward Madi Vellky (Dublin, Ohio) was third-team All-Midwest Region a year ago after scoring 15 points on six goals and three assists. She also led the team with four game-winning goals.
