LIBERTY, Mo. – The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team got back on the winning path with a 3-0 win at William Jewell College Sunday afternoon in Liberty, Missouri. USI rises to 5-2-0 overall and 3-2-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while William Jewell falls to 5-3-1, 3-2-1 GLVC.
The Screaming Eagles jumped out in front 1:18 into the first half when sophomore forward
Madi Vellky (Dublin, Ohio) scored the first goal of the game. The goal was Vellky's team-best fourth of the season and was assisted on the play by freshman forward
Natalie Geiger (Norwood, Ohio).
In the second half, USI sealed the game with goals by sophomore defender
Megan Herrington (St. Charles, Missouri) and junior forward
Makenzie Brinker (Evansville, Indiana). Herrington recorded her first collegiate goal on an assist by Brinker to make the score 2-0.
Brinker concluded the scoring with her second goal of the year to give the match its 3-0 final score. She was assisted on the match's final goal by junior midfielder
Maura Hulme (Westerville, Ohio).
USI posted its fifth team shutout of the year in the win, while sophomore goalkeeper
Jackie Lohmann (Owensboro, Kentucky) recorded her fourth shutout as an individual. Lohmann also made eight saves, one short of tying a career-high.
Overall, the Eagles dictated the pace of the game and outshot the Cardinals, 18-10.
USI returns to the friendly surroundings of Strassweg Field October 4 and October 6 when it plays the University of Indianapolis and Saint Joseph's College, respectively. The USI-Saint Joseph's game will be the Eagles' Kick for the Cure game to promote awareness of breast cancer.
