USI misses chances, falls to William Jewell, 2-1

LIBERTY, Mo. – The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team missed second half opportunities and lost to William Jewell College, 2-1, Sunday afternoon in Liberty, Missouri. USI, which has lost four-straight matches, falls to 2-5-1 overall and 1-5-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while William Jewell rises to 4-5-0, 2-4-0 GLVC.

The Cardinals scored the opening goal of the contest in the first half, finding the back of the USI goal with 11:18 remaining before halftime. The score would remain, 1-0, through the intermission.

William Jewell got the eventual game-winning goal three minutes into the second half to make the score, 2-0. USI, however, did not go down without a fight.

The Screaming Eagles outshot the Cardinals, 12-6, in the final 45 minutes and pulled to within one goal, 2-1, with just over 14 minutes to play. Senior forward Rush Dugger (Hanson, Kentucky) put USI on the scoreboard with his second goal of the season at 75:58.

USI had three more shots and three corner kicks in final 13 minutes, but could not find the tying goal. Senior midfielder Kevin Minor (Edwardsville, Illinois) had USI's best chance, but sent his shot off the post with 12:55 left.

Overall, USI outshot William Jewell, 20-12, and had the advantage in corner kicks, 5-2.

The Eagles return to action at Strassweg Field October 4 and October 6 when they host the University of Indianapolis and Saint Joseph's College respectively.
