EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team hopes to get back on track when it hits the road for a pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference games this weekend. The Screaming Eagles take flight in Kansas City, Missouri, when they play at Rockhurst University at 5 p.m. Friday before traveling to Liberty, Missouri, to visit William Jewell College at noon Sunday.
Following the two-game road swing, the Eagles return to the friendly surroundings of Strassweg Field October 4 and October 6 when they play the University of Indianapolis and Saint Joseph's College respectively. The USI-Saint Joseph's game will be the Eagles' Kick for the Cure game to promote awareness of breast cancer.
WEEK 4 EAGLE NOTES:
Third week for USI: The Eagles were 1-1-0 last week, defeating Missouri University of Science & Technology, 1-0, at the Goebel Soccer Complex before stumbling for the first time this season at the hands of Drury University, 4-2, at Strassweg Field.
Eagles' shutout streak ended at four games. USI had its shutout streak end at four matches and 449 minutes of action when Missouri S&T scored in the second half of last Friday's match. USI finished the weekend by allowing four goals in regulation to Drury on Sunday.
Vellky leads the way offensively. Sophomore Madi Vellky (Dublin, Ohio) leads the way for USI offensively with nine points on three goals and three assist. She also has a team-best two game-winning goals along with an assist on a third game-winning tally.
Schapker leads the way off the bench. Sophomore Leslie Schapker (Evansville, Indiana) is USI's top player off the bench, ranking second on the team in scoring with six points on two goals and two assists. She also led USI in the victory over Missouri S&T, assisting on the first goal and scoring the game-winning tally in the second overtime.
Eagles vs. Rockhurst: USI trails in the all-time series with Rockhurst, 1-7-1, after last year's 0-0 double-overtime tie at Strassweg Field. The Eagles won their first meeting with the Hawks, 2-1, at home in 2010.
Rockhurst in the GLVC and overall. The Hawks (3-0-2, 2-0-2 GLVC) have won their last two matches after starting the year, 1-0-2. Rockhurst posted a 1-0 victory at Bellarmine University last Friday and a 3-1 win at McKendree University Sunday.
Eagles vs. William Jewell. USI trails the all-time series with William Jewell, 0-2-0, after the 6-0 loss last year at Strassweg Field. The Eagles lost their first-ever meeting with the Cardinals, 4-1, in 2011 in Liberty, Missouri.
