EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team lost a high-scoring match with Drury University, 4-2, Sunday afternoon at the Strassweg Field. USI sees its record fall to 4-1-1 overall, 2-1-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference, while Drury rises to 4-2-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the conference.
The Screaming Eagles struck early for the first goal of the game when senior forward
Julia Kohnen (Florissant, Missouri) scored 6:17 into the contest. Kohnen, who recorded her first goal of the season, was assisted on the play by sophomore forward
Madi Vellky (Dublin, Ohio).
Drury responded with two unanswered goals to take a 2-1 lead into the intermission. The Panthers tied the game at 11:57 before taking the 2-1 lead with 51 seconds left before halftime.
In the second half, USI evened the score, 2-2, just over two minutes in when Vellky found the back of the goal for her third tally of the season. She scored off a rebounding shot by junior midfielder
Maura Hulme (Westerville, Ohio), who was credited with her second assist of the season.
The Panther offense and forward Emily Cline took over from that point. Cline scored the eventual game-winning goal at 61:40 and sealed the match with a tally at 75:42.
For the match, the Eagles led in overall shots, 16-13, and had the advantage in corner kicks, 9-2.
USI hits the road next weekend in the GLVC, traveling Friday to Rockhurst University for a 5 p.m. contest and Sunday to William Jewell College for a noon match-up. The next home match for the Eagles is October 4 when they host the University of Indianapolis.
