Eagles open GLVC slate Saturday at Rockhurst

EVANSVILLE, Ind.--- The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team opens its 2013 Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule Saturday at 5 p.m. when it travels to Kansas City, Missouri, to take on West Division rival Rockhurst University.
 
USI (6-2, 0-0 GLVC) also visits West Division opponent William Jewell College Sunday at 1 p.m. in Liberty, MO, to close out its first GLVC road trip of the season.
 
Tournament champions: The Screaming Eagles went undefeated (4-0) and captured the TownePlace Suites Findlay Classic title in Findlay, Ohio, last weekend. USI beat Mercyhurst University and tournament host The University of Findlay, 3-1, before sweeping both Malone University and Hillsdale College.
 
Three Eagles earn All-Tournament honors: Junior outside hitter Lauren DeShaney was named the TownePlace Suites Findlay Classic Tournament MVP. Senior libero Kayla Heldman (Greenwood, IN) earned outstanding libero honors, while sophomore middle blocker Abbey Winter (Germantown, IL) was named to the All-Tournament Team.
 
Heldman recognized by GLVC. Heldman was named the GLVC Baden Defensive Player of the Week after an impressive showing at the TownePlace Suites Findlay Classic. Heldman totaled 66 digs over the four-match weekend, averaging 4.71 digs per set.
 
Rockhurst notes: The Hawks (6-2), who fell out of the AVCA top 25 poll this week, went 2-2 at the TownePlace Suites Findlay Classic last weekend. Rockhurst fell to Findlay, 3-2, then came back to beat Malone, 3-1 on day one. The Hawks swept Mercyhurst but then fell to Hillsdale, 3-2, on the final day of the tournament.
 
Eagles vs. Hawks: USI trail the all-time series with Rockhurst, 2-10. The Eagles have yet to beat Rockhurst on their home court.
 
William Jewel notes: The Cardinals (1-8) open up GLVC play on Saturday against Bellarmine University (3-2).
 
Eagles vs. Cardinals: USI is 1-0 in the all-time series with William Jewell. The two teams last met for the first time in 2011 when the Eagles swept the Cardinals 3-0 at the Physical Activities Center.
