EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team returns to the friendly surroundings of Strassweg Field Friday and Sunday when it hosts Great Lakes Valley Conference matches against Missouri University of Science & Technology and Drury University. USI kicks-off Friday at 5 p.m. against Missouri S&T, while Sunday is a noon start versus Drury.
The Screaming Eagles (3-0-1, 1-0-1 GLVC) won their first three matches of the year at Strassweg Field and has shutout the first four opponents after the 0-0 tie at McKendree University.
WEEK 3 EAGLE NOTES:
Second week for USI: The Eagles were 2-0-1 last week defeating Urbana University, 4-0, and the University of Illinois Springfield, 1-0, before finishing the week with a 0-0 tie at McKendree.
Eagles looking for record tying fifth shutout. USI will be shooting to tie and break a record of five-straight shutouts to start a season. The 2013 squad is one behind the 1997 team that began the year by blanking the first five-straight opponents.
Lohmann recognized by GLVC and NSCAA. Sophomore goalkeeper Jackie Lohmann (Owensboro, Kentucky) was named the NSCAA Division II Player of the Week and the GLVC Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts against Urbana, UIS, and McKendree. Lohmann, who is tied for first in the GLVC with a 0.00 goals against average, is the first USI women's soccer player earn national player of the week honors.
Vellky leads the way offensively. Sophomore Madi Vellky (Dublin, Ohio) leads the way for USI offensively with five points on two goals and one assist. She already has a pair of game-winning goals and assisted on a third.
Eagles vs. Missouri S&T: USI is 8-3-0 in the all-time series with Missouri S&T, including a 1-0 victory last year in Rolla, Missouri. The Eagles have won the last four matches with the Miners and the last five matches against Missouri S&T at Strassweg Field.
Missouri S&T in the GLVC and overall. The Miners (0-1-1, 0-1-1 GLVC) are still looking for their first victory of the year overall. Missouri S&T opened the 2013 season with conference action, tying Rockhurst University, 0-0, and losing to William Jewell College, 2-1.
Eagles vs. Drury. USI trail the all-time series with Drury, 3-5-0, but has won the last three meetings. The Eagles defeated the Panthers, 1-0, last season in Springfield, Missouri, on a goal by then freshman forward Madi Vellky.
Drury in the GLVC. The Panthers (2-2-1, 0-1-1 GLVC) are at the .500 mark through the first five matches overall. Drury, who plays at UIS Friday night in conference play, was winless during the first GLVC weekend of 2013, losing at William Jewell, 1-0, and tying Rockhurst University, 1-1.
