Fundenberger lifts USI in overtime win

LEBANON, Ill. – University of Southern Indiana senior midfielder Corey Fundenberger (Lebanon, Indiana) scored the game-winning goal with 5:46 left in overtime to lift the Screaming Eagles to a 3-2 victory at McKendree University Sunday afternoon in Lebanon, Illinois. USI rises to 2-1-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while McKendree goes to 2-2-0 overall, 0-2-0 GLVC.
 
Fundenberger scored the game-winner in the "golden goal" overtime period off a pass from senior midfielder Kevin Minor (Edwardsville, Illinois). The goal was Fundenberger's second of the year.
 
The Bearcats scored the first tally of the game at the 14:11 mark of the opening half. The score would remain 1-0 until the final 10 minutes of the second half when both teams exploded for three goals.
 
USI's offense final ignited in the final 10 minutes of regulation when junior forward Caleb Mathers (Clarkston, Michigan) tied the match, 1-1, at 82:35. The goal was Mathers' team-best third of the season.
 
The Eagles would briefly take the lead in regulation, 2-1, when freshman midfielder Stephen Tuma (Pekin, Indiana) scored his first collegiate goal at 86:25 off a pass from freshman midfielder Steve Sokol (Perth, Australia). The tally was Tuma's first as an Eagle.
 
McKendree bounced back and tied the match, 2-2, with 1:04 left in regulation, setting the stage for Fundenberger in overtime.
 
On the defensive side of the field, USI senior goalkeeper Jeffrey Neidlinger (Carmel, Indiana) picked up his second win of the year. Neidlinger allowed two goals, but made five saves in the match.
 
USI returns to action Friday at 7:30 p.m. when it hosts Missouri University of Science & Technology at Strassweg Field to start a brief two-match homestand. The Eagles conclude next weekend's action September 22 when Drury University visits USI for a 2:30 p.m. match.
