EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Sophomore forward
Madi Vellky scored in the 58th minute to lift the University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over the University of Illinois Springfield in its Great Lakes Valley Conference opener Friday evening at Strassweg Field.
USI (3-0-0, 1-0-0 GLVC) escaped a scoring threat prior to Vellky's goal when Illinois Springfield's Ashley Surface missed wide on an open look.
The Screaming Eagles went right back down the field as Vellky, following a pass from the far side of the field from senior forward
Julia Kohnen, put a spin move on a Prairie Star defender at the top of the box before kicking the ball into the back of the net for the contest's only score and her second tally of the season.
USI had Illinois Springfield (1-2-0, 0-1-0 GLVC) on its heels throughout the contest as it outshot the Prairie Stars, 22-5, including 13-2 in shots on goal. Prairie Star goalie Paige Polonus racked up 12 saves, while USI sophomore goalkeeper
Jackie Lohmann recorded a pair of saves.
The Eagles, who recorded their third straight shutout to open the season, return to action Sunday at noon when they play McKendree University in Lebanon, Illinois.
