EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team used a fast start to gain an 83-64 Midwest Region victory over former Great Lakes Valley Conference rival Kentucky Wesleyan College Tuesday evening at the Physical Activities Center.
Senior guard
Stephanie Carpenter sunk a pair of three-pointers and had eight points in the first five minutes as the Screaming Eagles jumped out to a 12-0 lead over the visiting Panthers.
USI (4-0), which used a pressing-style defense throughout the opening period, extended its lead to 22-3 eight minutes into the contest as junior guard
Autumn Miller buried her second straight three-pointer before senior forward/center
Nicole Hazemi ended a 7-0 run with a layup.
The Eagles led by as many as 22 in the opening period before settling on a 47-31 halftime lead; but an early Kentucky Wesleyan second-half run allowed the Panthers to get to within striking distance.
Kentucky Wesleyan (3-1) forced the Eagles into three turnovers early in the period as it outscored the Eagles 6-2 in the first three minutes of the period to trim USI's advantage to 49-37.
A layup by junior forward/center
Anna Hackert with 16 minutes to play put a halt to the Panthers' push and started a 10-2 USI run that shifted momentum back to the Eagles' side. Junior forward/center
Mary O'Keefe scored four points in the run that lasted more than three minutes and put the Eagles' up 59-39.
The Eagles, who used a 16-8 run later in the half to put the final nail in the Panthers' coffin, never let their lead slip below 16 points during the final 12 minutes of the contest.
USI had five players score in double figures, led by Carpenters' game-high 20 points. Hackert added 17 points and seven rebounds, while Hazemi finished with 15 points and a career-high nine rebounds.
Miller chipped in 11 points and five assists, while O'Keefe posted her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Freshman guard Erin Dorn led the Panthers with 13 points, while senior center T'Essence Phelps grabbed a team-best 10 rebounds.
USI returns to action December 5 when it travels to Frankfort, Kentucky, to take on Kentucky State University. Tip-off is slated for 5 p.m. (CST).
