EVANSVILLE, Ind.— University of Southern Indiana junior outside hitter
Lauren DeShaney (Appleton, Wisconsin) slammed a match-high and season-high 20 kills to lead the Screaming Eagles volleyball team in a five-set (24, 26, 25-23, 22-25, 25-17, 15-9) victory over visiting Bellarmine University Tuesday night at the Physical Activities Center.
The Screaming Eagles, who lead the 2013 series against the visiting Knights 2-0, improve to 23-6, 14-2 in Great Lakes Valley Conference action. Bellarmine falls to 14-12, 8-8 in conference play.
USI struggled early in the match as the Knights held the Eagles to a meager .085 attacking clip in the first frame.
Whatever jitters where there in the opening set quickly subsided in the next game as the Eagles used multiple runs to distance themselves from the opposition and build a 13-8 advantage. USI hit a .333 and limited Bellarmine to .150 in the second stanza as it evened the match at 1-1.
Set three could have been anyone's game as there were 15 ties and two lead changes. Bellarmine prevailed however, grabbing the set 25-22.
Despite dropping the third set, USI picked up its game in the fourth frame, holding its lead until the end. The Eagles hit a blistering .424, taking the set 25-17 to tie the game at 2-2.
Continuing their momentum into the final game, the Eagles were able to grab an 11-7 lead, forcing Bellarmine to call a timeout. After the break USI went on a 4-2 run to end the set in its favor, 15-9.
Sophomore middle blocker
Abbey Winter (Germantown, Illinois) led at the net with a match-high eight blocks, while also putting down 15 kills for a .500 attacking percentage. Junior outside hitter
Fawn Ryan (Batesville, Indiana) added 16 kills, two service aces, five digs and two blocks. Senior setter
Jorae Bradbury (Decatur, Indiana) finished the night with a match-high 56 assists.
USI's passing game was led by senior libero
Kayla Heldman (Greenwood, Indiana) who racked up a team-high 31 digs, while sophomore right side hitter
Erica Oberbroeckling (Westfield, Indiana) added 10. Sophomore defensive specialist
Erin Goldschmidt (Smithton, Illinois), senior defensive specialist
Kristy Gerardot (Ft. Wayne, Indiana), and Bradbury contributed six digs apiece.
The Eagles welcome the University of Indianapolis (19-9, 13-3 GLVC) Friday at 7 p.m. for their second-to-last regular-season match. The Greyhounds lead this season's series, 1-0, after defeating USI, 3-2, in early October.
