Julia Kohnen (Florissant, Missouri) and freshman forward
Natalie Geiger (Norwood, Ohio) combined for two goals in the second half to lead the Screaming Eagles to a 3-0 victory over Saint Joseph's College Sunday afternoon at Bundrant Stadium on the campus of Evansville North High School. USI sees its record rise to 6-3-1 overall and 4-3-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while Saint Joseph's goes to 1-7-1 overall and 1-6-1 in the conference.
The victory also came on USI's "Kick for the Cure" game in which the Eagles wore pink jerseys to promote awareness of breast cancer and support for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
Kohnen and Geiger waited little time after a scoreless first half to put the Eagles on the scoreboard. Geiger scored the game-winning goal and her third of the season off a pass from Kohnen to give USI a 1-0 lead at 51:10.
The duo would strike again four minutes later when Kohnen scored from 15 yards out when she put away a cross from Geiger at 55:20. The goal was Kohnen's second of the season.
The Eagles would seal the victory at 80:13 when junior defender
Rachael Mayse (Evansville, Indiana) scored her first goal of the year to give USI a 3-0 final. Mayse fired a shot from 25 yards after the Pumas tried to clear the ball out of their defensive end.
Overall, USI outshot Saint Joseph's College, 15-5, and had the advantage in corner kicks, 2-0.
Between the posts for USI, sophomore goalkeeper
Jackie Lohmann (Owensboro, Kentucky) posted her fifth shutout of the season. Lohmann made three saves in recording her sixth win of the season.
USI starts its longest road trip of the season Friday when it travels to Lewis University for at 5 p.m. contest. The Eagles will be on the road for the next four matches, before return to Strassweg Field for a final two-game homestand to host Truman State University and Quincy University October 25 and 27, respectively. USI's match with Quincy on October 27 is Senior Day for the Eagles.
