INDIANAPOLIS --- Senior Libero
Kayla Heldman (Greenwood, Indiana) broke the University of Southern Indiana's all-time digs record on Saturday despite the Screaming Eagles', 3-2, road loss to the University of Indianapolis.
With her 10th dig coming in the third set, Heldman surpassed Amanda Probst for the all-time mark with the 1,491st dig of her career. She tallied 11 more in the remaining sets bringing her total to 1,502.
The loss drops the Eagles to 4-2 in Great Lakes Valley Conference action, 10-4 overall, while the Greyhounds improve its league record to 5-1, 9-5 overall.
USI was led by sophomore right side hitter
Erica Oberbroeckling (Westfield, Indiana) who posted her second double-double of the season with 18 kills and 15 digs. Junior outside hitters
Lauren DeShaney (Appleton, Wisconsin) and
Fawn Ryan (Batesville, Indiana), and sophomore middle blocker
Abbey Winter (Germantown, Illinois) contributed 16, 15 and 11 kills, respectively.
Senior setter
Jorae Bradbury (Decatur, Indiana) finished the night with 52 assists. At the net, Winter led USI with seven blocks.
Indianapolis began the night with a 25-23 victory in the opening set as the Greyhounds knocked down 22 kills, compared to 16 for USI.
The Eagles picked it up in game two, after three Greyhound errors put them in the lead, 18-15. USI put down six kills and one service ace to grab the second set, 25-20.
It was an even affair in set three as both teams hit .158. Tied at 24-24, a reception error by Heldman put UIndy ahead, 25-24. USI called a timeout but an attack error by Oberbroeckling gave the Greyhounds the needed set point and a 2-1 lead.
Set four belonged to USI, who hit .204 in the frame while limiting UIndy to .125. The Eagles were able to grab a 21-16 lead. USI battled to grab a 25-20 win, forcing the game deciding fifth set.
UIndy held the upperhand early in the last frame, but the Eagles overcame a three-point deficit to knot the score at 6-6. USI took a 9-7 lead forcing the Greyhounds to call a timeout. Indianapolis came back to the court and finished the job with a 15-11 set win.
USI returns to action Tuesday at 6 p.m. (CDT) when it travels to Louisville, Kentucky, to take on Bellarmine University. The Eagles conclude their five-match road trip next week when they visit Lewis University Friday at 7 p.m. and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Saturday at 3 p.m.
