Aurora, Ill.--- After sweeping Northern Michigan University on the first day of the Mizuno Great Lakes Valley Conference/Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament in Aurora, Illinois, the University of Southern Indiana volleyball team could not keep the momentum going into day two, falling to Saginaw Valley State University (21-25,19-25,15-25) and Grand Valley State University (23-25, 16-25, 18-25).
Â
The Screaming Eagles concluded their showing at the two-day tournament with a 1-2 record.
Â
In USI's first match against the Cardinals, junior outside hitter
Fawn Ryan (Batesville, Indiana) had nine kills to pace the offense. Senior setter
Jorae Bradbury (Decatur, Indiana) displayed her versatility, achieving team highs in assists (24) and digs (15), while also contributing one kill.
Â
Saginaw Valley took advantage of USI's lack of attack, limiting the Eagles to a .133 clip for the game.
Â
USI established itself as a threat early against Grand Valley, stringing together enough points to take a 13-9 lead. The Lakers held on though, later taking a 20-17 lead. Down 24-22, senior libero
Kayla Heldman (Greenwood, Indiana) tipped the ball over into free court space for a much-needed USI point. The Lakers answered back though with a kill from Megan Schoeder to end the set in their favor, 25-23.
Â
GVSU held USI to a .118 attacking percentage in the second frame, while it pumped out a .400 clip. The Lakers went on a 7-1 run at the end of the set, taking a 2-0 lead over the Eagles.
Â
USI battled with Grand Valley in the third game, trying to make up for the lost sets. Trailing 19-18, USI fell apart committing multiple errors that allowed the Lakers to go on a six-point run to claim the set.
Â
Junior outside hitter
Lauren DeShaney (Appleton, Wisconsin) led the Eagles against GVSU with nine kills, while sophomore right side hitter
Erica Oberbroeckling (Westfield, Indiana) trailed with eight. Sophomore middle blocker
Abbey Winter (Germantown, Illinois) contributed four kills while also leading with three blocks.
Â
The Eagles continue on the road next week Tuesday, traveling to regional opponent Cedarville University of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference for a 6 p.m. (CDT) match. USI returns to GLVC play next week Saturday at 5 p.m. (CDT) against Truman State in Kirksville, Missouri.Â
