EVANSVILLE, Ind.—University of Southern Indiana junior defender
Maura Hulme scored an unassisted goal in the 12th minute and sophomore goalkeeper
Jackie Lohmann had five saves as the Screaming Eagles upset No. 23 Truman State University, 1-0, Friday evening at Strassweg Field.
Hulme's goal, her third of the season, came as Truman State (10-3-3, 9-2-2 GLVC) was attempting to clear the ball out of the box. She stepped in front of a pass and made good on the match's first shot from 15 yards out.
Lohmann, who faced five corner kicks, turned away three shots on goal in the first 45 minutes and two more in the second half as she earned her seventh shutout of the season.
More importantly, Lohmann's seventh shutout keeps the Screaming Eagles (9-5-1, 7-5-1 GLVC) in the hunt for a Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament berth and gives USI its first win over a nationally-ranked opponent since the Eagles defeated then No. 9 Northern Kentucky University at Strassweg Field on September 11, 2011.
The Eagles conclude the 2013 home schedule Sunday when they host No. 9 Quincy University for Senior Day at Strassweg Field. USI will honor senior forward
Julia Kohnen and senior midfielder
Brianna Whitmore prior to the noon kick-off.
Quincy (12-0-3, 10-0-2 GLVC) visited the University of Illinois Springfield Friday night.
