USI dominates in win at Maryville

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – University of Southern Indiana senior midfielder
Corey Fundenberger (Lebanon, Indiana) scored twice and led the Screaming Eagles to a 3-1 victory over Maryville University Friday afternoon in St. Louis, Missouri. USI saw its record go to 5-6-2 overall, and 4-6-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while Maryville ends the day 1-11-0 overall and 1-10-0 in the GLVC.
Fundenberger started the scoring for the Eagles with his third goal of the year at 13:06. Fundenberger found the back of the goal off assists from senior forward
Rush Dugger (Hansen, Kentucky) and junior midfielder
Caleb Mathers (Clarkston, Michigan).
The Eagles would hold onto the 1-0 lead until five minutes into the second half when Dugger recorded his fourth goal of the season to give USI a 2-0 lead. Fundenberger assisted Dugger on the play 50:19.
USI would increase the lead to 3-0 when Fundenberger struck for his second goal of the game at 62:50. The fourth goal of the year for Fundenberger tied him for the team lead in goals with Dugger and Mathers.
The Saints broke up the Eagles' shutout bid with a tally at 73:56 to make the score 3-1. USI's defense held up the rest of the way, holding Maryville without a shot in the final 16 minutes.
Overall, USI outshot Maryville overall, 14-4, and in shots on-goal, 9-2.
The Eagles conclude the longest road trip of the year at 2:30 p.m. Sunday when they visit the University of Missouri-St. Louis. USI returns to Strassweg Field for a final regular season two-game homestand October 25 and October 27, hosting host Truman State University and Quincy University, respectively.
