USI looking to make a move in GLVC standings


 
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team hopes to make a move in the Great Lakes Valley Conference standing as it concludes its longest road trip of the year. USI (7-4-1, 5-4-1 GLVC) travels to St. Louis, Missouri, Friday to play Maryville University (0-11-1, 0-9-1 GLVC) at 3:30 p.m., before crossing the city Sunday to visit the University of Missouri-St. Louis (4-7-1, 2-7-1 GLVC) at noon.
 
The final two-game regular season homestand is October 25 and October 27, featuring Truman State University and Quincy University, respectively. The October 27 match-up with Quincy is Senior Day for the Eagles.
 
WEEK 7 EAGLE NOTES:
 
Sixth week for USI: The Eagles split for the fourth week in a row, winning a thrilling overtime match, 1-0, over Lewis University and falling 3-0 to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.
 
In the GLVC. USI is in a five-way tie for sixth in the GLVC as it battles for a spot in the league's post-season tournament. The Eagles have five matches remaining on the schedule, three on the road and two at Strassweg Field.
 
Kohnen and Geiger continue to be the USI offense. Senior forward Julia Kohnen (Florissant, Missouri) and freshman forward Natalie Geiger (Norwood, Ohio) continue to be the USI offensive machine over the last two weeks. Geiger, with the assist from Kohnen, was the difference in the 1-0 overtime win at Lewis University last Friday for the Eagles only goal of the weekend.
 
Offensive leaders. Sophomore Madi Vellky (Dublin, Ohio) leads the way for USI offensively with 11 points on four goals and three assist. She also has a team-best three game-winning. Freshman forward Natalie Geiger (Norwood, Ohio), who has become the offensive spark plug on the team, is second with 10 points on four goals and two assists. Geiger also has two game-winning goals.
 
Between the posts. USI goalkeeper Jackie Lohmann (Owensboro, Kentucky) ranks seventh in the GLVC with a 0.84 goals against average (GAA). She also has six shutouts this season, tying her mark as a freshman.
 
Eagles vs. Maryville: USI leads in the all-time series with Maryville, 3-1-0, after defeating the Saints, 6-2, at Strassweg Field last fall. The Eagles have won three in a row overall against Maryville and the last two in St. Louis.
 
Maryville in the GLVC and overall. The Saints are 15th in the GLVC and have lost their last six matches.
 
Eagles vs. UMSL. UMSL holds the all-time series lead with USI, 10-8-0, after the Eagles took last year's meeting, 3-1, at Strassweg Field. The Eagles have taken three of the last four meetings with the Tritons, but UMSL has won four of the last five in St. Louis.
 
UMSL in the GLVC. The Tritons start the week 13th in the GLVC. UMSL has lost its last three matches and are winless in its six contests.
