Eagles tie 11th-ranked Lewis, 1-1, in double overtime

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team battled 11th-ranked Lewis University to a 1-1 double-overtime tie Friday evening in Romeoville, Illinois. USI saw its record go to 3-6-2 overall, and 2-6-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while Lewis ends the night 7-0-4 overall and 6-0-3 in the conference.  
 
The Flyers were first to post a tally on the scoreboard, taking a 1-0 lead at 24:08 of the opening half. Lewis' 1-0 lead would hold through the intermission.
 
USI evened the match, 1-1, and forced overtime when junior midfielder Caleb Mathers (Clarkston, Michigan) scored his team-best fourth goal of the year at 73:19. Mathers was assisted on the play by senior midfielder Miles Durham (Madisonville, Kentucky).  
 
Following regulation, the Flyers had a pair of chances in the first overtime period, while the Eagles had the only shot during the second extra period.
 
Between the posts for the Eagles, senior goalkeeper Jeffrey Neidlinger (Carmel, Indiana) played all 110 minutes to get the tie for USI. Neidlinger faced 11 Lewis shots, making four saves.
 
USI had the majority of offensive changes in the 110 minutes, out shooting Lewis, 19-11. The Flyers, however, had the slim advantage in corner kicks, 9-8.
 
The Eagles reach the midway point of their longest road trip of the year when they visit the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Sunday at 2:30 p.m. The Rangers rose to 6-4-1 overall and 5-4-0 in the GLVC after defeating the University of Illinois Springfield, 3-2, in Somers, Wisconsin.
 
USI returns to Strassweg Field for a final regular season two-game homestand October 25 and October 27, hosting host Truman State University and Quincy University, respectively.
