USI drops 3-2 match at UIndy

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team lost its road-trip finale at the University of Indianapolis, 3-2, Sunday afternoon in Indianapolis, Indiana. USI falls to 6-4-0 overall and 5-3-0 in the GLVC, while UIndy goes to 4-6-0, 3-5-0 GLVC.  
 
The Screaming Eagles and the Greyhounds combined for three goals in the first half with UIndy building a 2-1 lead by the intermission. UIndy scored first with a tally at 18:35 before USI tied the score 1-1 with an unassisted goal by senior forward Susan Ellsperman (Newburgh, Indiana) at 20:56. The goal was Ellsperman's team-best sixth of the season.
 
The Greyhounds took back the lead just over a minute later with a goal at 21:58. The score would in UIndy's favor through the intermission and into the early second half.
 
In the second half, UIndy increased its lead to 3-1 on a goal at 52:54 and would hold the two-goal lead for the next 30 minutes. USI cut the two-goal deficit in half at 81:57 when junior forward Julia Kohnen (Florissant, Missouri) headed in a corner kick by Ellsperman. The goal was Kohnen's fourth of the season.
 
The Eagles had three more shots at the Greyhound goal in the final seven minutes, but could not find the back of the net. UIndy narrowly out shot USI, 17-16, in the match, while the Eagles had the advantage in corner kicks, 7-0.
 
USI returns to the friendly surroundings of Strassweg Field for a two-match homestand next weekend when it hosts William Jewell College and Rockhurst University. Start time October 5 versus WJC is 7:30 p.m., while kick off October 7 with Rockhurst is 2:30 p.m.
