Childhood Cancer Awareness Day scheduled for Sunday
EVANSVILLE, IN – The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team wraps up its four-game homestand this weekend by hosting the University of Wisconsin-Parkside and Lewis University at Strassweg Field. The match Friday versus UW-Parkside is scheduled for 5 p.m., while Sunday's kick off against Lewis is set for noon.
The USI-Lewis game on Sunday is Childhood Cancer Awareness Day at Strassweg Field. The Screaming Eagles will be wearing special gold jerseys to promote awareness of this disease that affect so many children. September is Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month nationwide.
The Screaming Eagles (3-3-0, 2-2-0 GLVC) are looking to string some victories together after splitting each of the first three weekends of the regular season. USI was disappointed with a 1-0 loss to the University of Missouri-St. Louis last Friday, but rebounded to defeat Maryville University, 2-0, on Sunday.
The USI bench was the offensive spark in Sunday's victory as senior midfielder
Ryan Moll (Evansville, Indiana) and junior midfielder
Kevin Minor (Edwardsville, Illinois) scored the goals. The two-goal match was just the second of the year for the Eagles.
Overall, senior midfielder/forward
Jeffrey McClure (Indianapolis, Indiana) leads the USI offensive attack with five points on two goals and one assists.
The key to USI's three wins this season has been the defense. The Eagles are allowing less than a goal per game, led by junior goalkeeper
Jeffrey Neidlinger (Carmel, Indiana). Neidlinger has a 0.80 goals against average in 450 minutes of action and one of USI's two shutouts this season.
The Rangers of UW-Parkside (2-3-1, 1-3-0 GLVC) come to Strassweg Field in the middle of a three-match losing streak. UW-Parkside started the year with a tie and two victories, including a GLVC opening win over Missouri University of Science and Technology, before falling short the last three matches.
The Rangers leads the all-time series with the Eagles, 15-7-1, but USI has won the last two meetings. The Eagles defeated the Rangers in Somers, Wisconsin, last fall, 1-0, in overtime and won the last meeting at Strassweg Field, 2-1, in 2010.
The Flyers of Lewis (2-4-0, 2-2-0 GLVC) lost back-to-back road games in last weekend's conference play after starting league action with two wins at home. Lewis also started the year with a pair of losses.
Lewis leads the all-time series with USI, 22-18-0, after defeating the Eagles, 2-1, last year. The Flyers have had the Eagles number of late, winning the last nine meetings
