EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team exploded for six second half goals to defeat Maryville University, 6-2, Sunday afternoon at Strassweg Field. USI is 4-2-0 overall and 3-1-0 GLVC, while Maryville is 2-4-0, 1-2-0 GLVC.
After the teams battled through a scoreless first half, the Saints took a 1-0 lead five minutes into the final half. Maryville's lead lasted less than a minute when USI sophomore defender
Rachael Mayse (Evansville, Indiana) scored her first goal of the season at 51:27 to knot the match up at 1-1. Mayse was assisted on the goal by freshman forward
Madi Vellky (Dublin, Ohio).
The Screaming Eagles wasted very little time in taking its first lead of the game when junior forward
Julia Kohnen (Florissant, Missouri) gave USI 2-1 lead at 53:53. Kohnen was assisted on her third goal of the year by senior forward
Susan Ellsperman and sophomore forward
Makenzie Brinker (Evansville, Indiana).
Vellky sealed the USI victory with back-to-back goals coming at 58:34 and 75:39 to give the Eagles a 4-1 advantage. The freshman's second goal of the year was assisted by freshman forward
McKinsey Durham (Madisonville, Kentucky), while her third goal of the season was assisted by Brinker.
Ellsperman put the match out of reach at 5-1 with her fourth tally of the season off a pass from senior defender
Jessica Gates (Crown Point, Indiana) at 78:45 and freshman defender
Mary Ulrich (Newburgh, Indiana) gave the Eagles their largest lead, 6-1, with a tally at 84:08. The goal was Ulrich's first of the season and her career at USI.
The Saints did not go quietly as they cut the Eagles' lead to 6-2 with a goal at 89:03, but time ran out as USI posted a 6-2 victory. USI outshot Maryville in the match, 19-14, and had an advantage in corner kicks of 5-2.
The Eagles play the second half of the four-match homestand next weekend when they host the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Lewis University Sunday at 2:30 p.m. The four-match homestand is the longest of the season for USI.
