EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team posted a 3-1 home-opening win over the University of Missouri-St. Louis Friday night at Strassweg Field. USI is 3-2-0 overall and 2-1-0 GLVC, while UMSL is 0-3-1, 0-2-0 GLVC.
The Screaming Eagles struck first in the match when senior forward
Susan Ellsperman (Newburgh, Indiana) recorded an unassisted goal off a restart at 17:50. The Tritons would respond 12 minutes later and knot the score up, 1-1, at 29:27.
Ellsperman gave USI the advantage back just over a minute later at 30:56 when she converted a pass from sophomore defender
Maura Hulme (Westerville, Ohio). Ellsperman's first half goals were her second and third of the season, while the assist was Hulme's second of 2012. USI took the momentum and the 2-1 lead into the intermission.
After halftime, senior midfielder
Paige Nuelle (St. Louis, Missouri) sealed the victory with the Eagles' third goal and her first of the season at 49:28. Ellsperman started the play by knocking a corner kick to senior defender
Jessica Gates (Crown Point, Indiana), who passed the ball to Nuelle in the box. The goal gave the match its final score of 3-1..
For the match, the Eagles outshot the Tritons, 15-9, while both teams had three corner kicks each.
Between the posts for USI, freshman goalkeeper
Jackie Lohmann posted her third win of the year. Lohmann allowed the first half goal and made four saves in the match, three coming in the first half.
USI continues its four-game homestand at 2:30 p.m. Sunday when it welcomes Maryville University to Strassweg Field. The Saint start this weekend with a record to 1-2-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the GLVC and were scheduled to visit Kentucky Wesleyan College tonight.
