SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team recorded its first victory of the year with a 3-1 win Saturday afternoon in Springfield, Ohio. USI evens its record at 1-1-0 to start the year, while Urbana falls to 0-1-0.
The Screaming Eagles flew out to a 2-0 lead in the first half on goals by junior forward
Julia Kohnen (Florissant, Missouri) and freshman forward
Shelby Tarantino (Loveland, Ohio). Kohnen picked up her first tally of the season off a pass from sophomore defender
Maura Hulme (Westerville, Ohio) at 23:01 of the first half.
Tarantino recorded her first collegiate goal at 34:49 and allowed the Eagles to take a 2-0 advantage into the locker room at halftime. The goal was unassisted.
In the second half, USI sealed the victory and extended the lead to 3-0 on a goal by senior forward
Susan Ellsperman (Newburgh, Indiana). Ellsperman headed in a pass from Tarantino at 70:34 for her first goal of the season. Tarantino's assist also was the first of her career at USI.
The Blue Knights would find some offense in the final seconds of the match when they scored their only tally with seven ticks on the clock for the final score of 3-1.
Between the posts for USI, freshman goalkeeper
Jackie Lohmann (Owensboro, Kentucky) posted her first win as an Eagle. Lohman made four saves and allowed one goal in 90 minutes to get the win.
Overall, USI out shot Ubrana, 18-10, and had the advantage in corner kicks, 7-2.
The four-game road swing concludes next week when the Eagles open the GLVC schedule September 7 at Quincy University and September 9 at the University of Illinois Springfield. The first home match for the Eagles is not until September 14 when they host the University of Missouri-St. Louis for a GLVC match-up.
