(UPDATED) WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team jumped out to a pair of one-set leads Friday, only to see both advantages fade away as it fell to No. 7 Washburn University, 23-25, 25-13, 25-22, 25-12, and to Saginaw Valley State University 17-25, 25-17, 25-20, 25-18 at The Hyatt Place Sunshine Classic.
USI (0-2) rallied from a 15-10 deficit to steal the first set from Washburn, but the Lady Blues countered with a dominating effort in the second frame to even the match at a set apiece.
Washburn held off a late USI rally to edge the Screaming Eagles in the third frame before using a blistering .387 attacking percentage in the fourth game to close out the match.
Sophomore outside hitters
Lauren DeShaney and
Fawn Ryan paced the Eagles' attack with 11 and 10 kills, respectively, while freshman defensive specialist
Erin Goldschmidt had 10 digs. Junior setter
Jorae Bradbury added 27 assists for the Eagles.
In the nightcap, the Eagles used an 8-2 run in the opening frame to pull away from Midwest Region foe Saginaw Valley State and build a one-set advantage.
The Cardinals used a blistering .529 attacking percentage in the second stanza to even the match at 1-1; then used an 11-4 surge in the third game to gain the upper hand. Saginaw Valley State closed the door on the Eagles by hitting .382 in the fourth set.
DeShaney and Ryan each had 11 kills in the nightcap, while senior right side hitter
Emily Meyer added six service aces.
USI returns to action Saturday when it takes on tournament host Palm Beach Atlantic University at 9 a.m. (CDT) and Barry University at 11 a.m.
