EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team opened the 2012 campaign with a heartbreaking loss to Cedarville University, 1-0, Thursday night at Strassweg Field. Screaming Eagles begin the season, 0-1-0.
The Eagles and Yellow Jackets battled up-and-down the field for 85 minutes before Cedarville found the back of the USI goal at the 85:22 mark. The one goal would be all of the offense that Cedarville would need for the victory.
USI had its best chances to score in the second half. Senior defender
Danny Pratte (Florissant, Missouri) had a header go inches over the cross bar at the 56:19 mark, while freshman defender
John Rohling (Nashville, Tennessee) suffered the same fate on a header with 28 seconds remaining.
Overall, Cedarville out shot USI, 14-12, and had the advantage in corner kicks, 8-3. USI junior goalkeeper
Jeffrey Neidlinger (Carmel, Indiana) led the Eagles between the posts with six saves and allowed the one goal.
USI concludes the season-opening two-match homestand at 7 p.m. Saturday when it hosts Oakland City University. The Eagles go on the road next week to open Great Lakes Valley Conference action, beginning September 7 at Quincy University. The next home match for the Eagles is not until September 14 when they host the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
