Women's hoops host Kentucky State in home-opener

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team opens its 2012-13 home schedule Saturday at 1 p.m. when it hosts Kentucky State University at the Physical Activities Center.

USI (2-0) is coming off a pair of 17-point victories to begin the regular-season.

Junior guards Stephanie Carpenter and Ariel Barnes combined for 27 points as the Screaming Eagles rallied from 12 down to defeat the University of West Florida, 70-53, in the opening game of the UWF Tip-Off Classic.

Sophomore guard Taylor Stevenson and sophomore forward/center Mary O'Keefe had 19 and 18 points, respectively, as the Eagles ran away with an 81-64 victory over Georgia Southwestern State University the following day.

Carpenter is leading the Eagles through two games with 14.5 points and 4.0 assists per game, while Stevenson is adding in 13.0 points per outing. Barnes and O'Keefe each are each chipping in 10.0 points per appearance, while sophomore forward/center Anna Hackert is contributing 9.0 points and a team-high 8.5 rebounds per contest.

Kentucky State (0-2) is coming off a tough 62-58 setback to No. 24 Ferris State University after falling, 73-46, to Bellarmine University to begin the season.

Junior guard Style Harper and senior guard Jasmine Davis lead the Thorobreds with 12.5 and 12.0 points per game, respectively, while Harper is averaging a team-high 6.5 rebounds per appearance.

USI leads the all-time series with the former Great Lakes Valley Conference member, 12-3. The Eagles and Thorobreds last played on December 30, 1999, with USI coming out with a 76-45 victory at the PAC.

Saturday's contest is the first of eight straight home games for the Eagles, including next weekend's USI Thanksgiving Classic.
