First win over a ranked opponent since 2000

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern of Southern Indiana men's soccer team upset 16^th-ranked Rockhurst University, 3-2, Sunday afternoon at Strassweg Field. USI rises 8-4-0 overall and 7-3-0 in the GLVC, while Rockhurst goes to 9-2-2, 7-2-1 GLVC.
 
The USI victory over a ranked opponent was the first for the Screaming Eagles since 2000 when they defeated the ninth-ranked University of Wisconsin-Parkside on the road. The win also was the Eagles' first over the Hawks in the 16-game series between USI and Rockhurst.
 
After battling to a scoreless tie through the first 35 minutes of the first half, the Hawks scored first to take a 1-0 lead at the 37:45 mark. The Screaming Eagles responded less than four minutes later when senior midfielder Jeffrey McClure (Indianapolis, Indiana) scored off a pass from junior midfielder Corey Fundenberger (Lebanon, Indiana). The goal was McClure's seventh of the season.
 
In the second half, McClure put USI up 3-1 with his eighth and ninth goals of the year. The senior midfielder, who has scored seven goals the last two Sunday, scored his second goal off a pass from junior defender Nick DeSalvatore (Brentwood, Tennessee) at 49:34. McClure's third goal and the eventual game-winning tally came at 55:23 on a cross from sophomore midfielder Carlos Mayser (Santa Cruz, Bolivia).
 
The Hawks cut the USI margin to one with a goal 60:06, but would get no closer. USI senior goalkeeper Ben Dempsey (Evansville, Indiana) faced a total of 14 shots in the match and made six saves to earn his third victory of the year.
 
Overall, Rockhurst outshot USI, 14-10, and had the advantage in corner kicks, 4-2.
 
USI hits the road for the next three matches when it travels to eighth-ranked Drury University (October 12); Missouri University of Science and Technology (October 14); and McKendree University (October 19).  The Eagles return home October 21 for Senior Day when they host Bellarmine University.
