EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team enters post-season play for the fourth-straight season when it travels to Bellarmine University Sunday for the first round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament. The kick-off for sixth-seeded USI and third-seeded Bellarmine is 11 a.m. (CDT) in Louisville, Kentucky.
The Screaming Eagles (10-6-1, 9-5-1 GLVC) earned the sixth spot in the league's tournament after defeating Kentucky Wesleyan College in a 2-1 overtime nail-biter Wednesday evening in Owensboro, Kentucky. USI senior forward
Susan Ellsperman (Newburgh, Indiana) scored the game-winning goal, 4:34 into the “sudden-victory” overtime.
The victory pushed the Eagles' win total into double-digits for the second time since 2000 and the sixth time in the history of the program (1996-2012).
Ellsperman finished the regular season as USI's team leader on offense with a career-high 21 points on eight goals and five assists. The 21-points this season moves her into third all-time at USI with 68, while her 23 career goals and 22 career assists are ranked fourth all-time, respectively.
Freshman forward
Madi Vellky (Dublin, Ohio) and junior forward
Julia Kohnen (Florissant, Missouri) follow in the scoring column with 15 points and 11 points, respectively. Vellky has six goals, including a team-best four game-winners, and three assists, while Kohnen has five goals and one assist.
Standing in USI's way in the first round are the Knights of Bellarmine (13-2-2, 11-2-2 GLVC). The Knights, who finished their regular season with a 1-0 win at McKendree University, defeated the Eagles last Sunday in a heartbreaker, 2-1, on a penalty kick in the final five minutes of the match.
USI trails Bellarmine in the all-time series, 10-6-2, with the Knights taking command the last few seasons and posting a record of 6-0-2 over the Eagles.
In addition to the Eagles and the Knights, the top half of the GLVC Tournament bracket features second-seeded William Jewell College (13-1-3, 11-1-3 GLVC) and seventh-seeded Lewis University (10-6-1, 8-6-1 GLVC).
