USI loses heartbreaker on Senior Day

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team lost a heartbreaker to Bellarmine University on Senior Day, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Strassweg Field. USI goes to 9-6-1 overall and 8-5-1 in the GLVC, while Bellarmine finishes the day 12-2-2, 10-2-2 GLVC.
 
Despite the loss, the Screaming Eagles clinched a spot in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament. The league's post season tournament is slated to begin October 28 with seeds and first-round locations still to be determined with the end of conference play on Wednesday. USI, currently, is seventh in the conference standings.
 
On Senior Day, USI jumped out in front midway through the first half when freshman defender Emily Cummings (Cincinnati, Ohio) scored her first collegiate goal to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. The Knights responded with their first goal of the match at 34:57 and sent the teams into the intermission tied 1-1.
 
Bellarmine's first half goal snapped the USI defensive scoreless streak at 437 minutes and was the Eagles first goal allowed in four matches.
 
The Eagles and the Knights battled to a draw for the first 41 minutes of the second half before Bellarmine scored the game-winner on a penalty kick at 86:26 after USI was called for a foul in the box. USI had only one more opportunity on a shot by senior defender Jessica Gates (Crown Point, Indiana) with 1:34 left to play.
 
Overall, USI had more opportunities, out shooting Bellarmine, 12-8, but the Knights had the advantage in corner kicks, 7-4.  
 
The Eagles conclude the 2012 regular season Wednesday at Kentucky Wesleyan College in Owensboro, Kentucky. Match time is 7:45 p.m.
