USI clinches GLVC Tournament spot despite loss

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern of Southern Indiana men's soccer team stumbled on Senior Day, 1-0, to Bellarmine University Sunday at Strassweg Field. USI falls to 9-6-0 overall and 8-5-0 in the GLVC, while Bellarmine goes to 9-4-3, 8-3-3 GLVC.
 
The Knights scored the match's only goal at 22:59 of the first half before shutting out the Screaming Eagles. Bellarmine dominated offensively during the opening 45 minutes, out shooting USI, 10-3, while the Eagles had the balance of opportunities in the second half, 7-4.
 
Despite the loss, USI clinched a berth in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament for the first time since 2003. The league's post season tournament is slated to begin October 28 with seeds and first-round locations still to be determined with the end of conference play on Wednesday. USI, currently, is seventh in the conference standings and could finish as high as fifth with a victory in its final conference game of 2012.
 
USI closes out the 2012 regular-season schedule at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday when it travels to Owensboro, Kentucky to visit Kentucky Wesleyan College.
