AURORA, Ill.—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team saw a one-set advantage fade away in a 23-25, 25-19, 25-17, 25-20 setback to No. 21 Ferris State University Saturday afternoon at the Mizuno Great Lakes Valley Conference/Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Crossover.
After using a 4-1 run to build a 22-18 lead in the opening frame, the Screaming Eagles survived a late Ferris State surge to earn a two-point victory and a one-set advantage in the match.
Ferris State (15-5), however, answered the Eagles' challenge in the second frame as it hit .371 and won six of the final seven points to earn a six-point win and even the match at a game apiece.
USI (10-11) found itself on the opposite end of a 12-1 outburst in the third frame as it fell behind 15-3. The Eagles cut the deficit to five on a pair of occasions later in the stanza, but the Bulldogs won four of the final five rallies to grab an eight-point win and a one-set lead in the match.
Ferris State used a 7-1 run in the fourth set to break a 16-16 tie as it closed the match with a five-point win.
Sophomore outside hitter 
Lauren DeShaney led the Eagles with 16 kills, while fellow classmate 
Fawn Ryan added 11 kills.
Junior libero 
Kayla Heldman had 21 digs, while senior outside hitter 
Abbi Williams and junior setter 
Jorae Bradbury added 12 and 11 digs, respectively. Bradbury added a team-high 26 assists.
USI returns to action Tuesday at 7 p.m. when it hosts Kentucky State University at the Physical Activities Center.
