AURORA, Ill.— After rallying from large deficits to defeat Northern Michigan University in their first match of the day, the University of Southern Indiana volleyball team could not overcome a two-set deficit as it fell to Wayne State University 25-21, 25-19, 20-25, 25-18 Friday evening at the Mizuno Great Lakes Valley Conference/Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Crossover.
Wayne State (13-6) hit .333 in the opening set and used a 7-2 run midway through the frame to race away with a four-point victory. The Warriors used a late 5-0 surge to bury the Screaming Eagles in the second frame and grab a two-set lead.
USI (10-10), which rose above the .500 mark for the first time this season with
its straight-set win over Northern Michigan, bounced back with a solid effort in the third frame. The Eagles, who hit .375 in game three, jumped out to an early lead that they would not relinquish en route to a five-point victory.
The Eagles, who played most of the match without a true right side hitter—senior
Emily Meyer and freshman
Erica Oberbroeckling were both sidelined due to injury—held an early three-point advantage in the fourth frame.
An 8-2 Wayne State run, however, saw that lead dwindle away and momentum shift into the opposition's favor as the Eagles suffered a seven-point setback in the clinching game.
Freshman middle blocker
Abbey Winter had 10 kills, a .412 attacking percentage, and six blocks to lead the Eagles, while senior outside hitter
Abbi Williams came off the bench to hammer down nine kills.
Senior setter
Ashley King also came off the bench to rack up 27 assists, while junior libero
Kayla Heldman had 13 digs.
USI returns to action Saturday at 1 p.m. when it takes on No. 21 Ferris State University to conclude the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover. GLVC teams took a 13-11 lead over the GLIAC in total matches won through the first day of the competition.
